 What Do I Write?

Directing our anger into positive action is the best way to deal with any problem. Take the time to express your ideas and sentiments on the existing conditions in local animal shelters.

The letter below is just a sample that can get you started. If you find that it doesn't express your opinions adequately, please take this opportunity to write your feelings about this issue to our state representatives. Address the topic/s you feel must change to give our animal friends a better chance at life.

Our goal is to get you to write about the issues that are killing thousands of our pets every year in this state. The silent majority needs to speak out whether it's for a longer holding period,  mandatory micro chipping, mandatory spaying/neutering, more funding, better facilities, more staff, a better animal screening process, etc. Writing  is the quickest way that our government will become aware that people want to see changes!

Please remember to place your name, home address, e-mail address, and telephone number on any correspondence you send to a government official, otherwise they may not answer you or consider your request.

You can copy the text below and paste it into the body of your e-mail message or compose your own letter. The note below can be downloaded in PDF format  if you wish to mail a paper copy instead of sending an e-mail.

The e-mail addresses following To: are those of the PA State Senators. You may be able to copy and then paste the list into your e-mail program's address field. This would send the a copy of the letter to all of these senators at once. A big time saver if your e-mail program can handle it.

RE: Pennsylvania Dog Law – Time for a change

Shouldn’t an animal shelter give the owners and lost pets at least a week or two to reunite? How many animals are killed in shelters every year? How many adopted out or reunited with owners? Is the ratio of adoptions to killed reasonable? Is there any effort made to contact breed rescue groups? Are the facilities so small that animals cannot be given a real chance at life? Is it time to get government agencies to take some type of action to improve these conditions?

There are several breed rescue groups and internet sources that could be contacted by shelters for assistance with placing or finding the owners of a lost dog. Shouldn’t all of Pennsylvania’s SPCAs be instructed to contact these groups for assistance in placing animals?

Our government should take an active role in bringing about changes that affect the wellbeing of our canine friends.

House Bill 1193 would effectively expand the minimum holding period for an adoptable animal to at least 72 hours and should be used as a base model for all counties in Pennsylvania. However, this proposed legislation is limited to only Second Class and Second Class A counties.

Legislation like this should be enacted state-wide as a comprehensive change to the PA Dog Law.

Please consider authoring an amendment to House Bill 1193  to include every county and thereby, effectively change the way our pets are treated throughout our state.

Thank you for your time and help.

 Sincerely,
